This DIY natural clay and oatmeal face mask is quick to make from scratch, uses just five simple ingredients, and delivers gentle yet effective results. Its nourishing formula is especially soothing for dry or sensitive skin, leaving your complexion soft, smooth, and radiant. For convenience, you can mix the dry ingredients in a larger batch and store them in a jar. Then, whenever you’re ready for a mini spa moment, simply combine a portion of the dry mix with honey and kefir to create a fresh, ready-to-use mask in seconds. In this post, I also show how to tweak the recipe for oily or combination skin so everyone can enjoy a personalized, glowing result.

This post is the first in my 7 Weeks to Glow: Weekly Home Spa Treats to Relax, Refresh & Radiate series—a simple, feel-good way to pamper yourself, one nourishing recipe at a time.

Why This Face Mask Works

  • Clay helps to draw out impurities, unclog pores, and give you a clearer complexion.
  • Oatmeal is very soothing for the skin. It also gently exfoliates and removes dead skin cells, leaving your skin smoother and more radiant.
  • Lavender blossoms provide soothing and calming effects, helps to reduce inflammation, and makes the skin more refreshed.
  • Raw honey hydrates, heals skin, and provides gentle probiotics.
  • Kefir helps to restore a good balance of bacteria on the skin, is gently exfoliating, and promotes the production of collagen.

Who This Mask Is Best For

This gentle, nourishing face mask is especially well suited for:

  • Dry skin – Oatmeal, honey, and kefir help soften and support moisture while mild clay cleanses without stripping.
  • Sensitive skin – Finely ground oatmeal and honey are naturally soothing. Use a gentle clay (such as kaolin or French green clay) and keep the lavender very finely ground.
  • Normal skin – Helps maintain balance and supports a smooth, healthy-looking complexion.
  • Skin that looks dull or tired – Gentle exfoliation and hydration can help promote a natural, healthy glow.
  • Anyone new to DIY skincare – Simple, familiar ingredients make this a good beginner-friendly mask.

Who This Mask May Not Be Best For

This mask may not be ideal if you have:

  • Very oily skin: This mask is generally nourishing rather than deeply oil-absorbing. However, if you swap kaolin for bentonite clay, it can help absorb excess oil and may be more suitable for oily or combination skin.
  • Active acne or inflamed breakouts – Clay masks formulated specifically for acne may be more appropriate.
  • Rosacea or highly reactive skin – Even gentle ingredients can be triggering. Patch testing is very important important.
  • Allergies to dairy, honey, or lavender.

Ingredients

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1

Place the oatmeal in a pestle and grind it as finely as you can. If you prefer, a spice grinder or mini coffee mill works just as well. Transfer the finely ground oatmeal to a small bowl.

Step 2

Gently grind the dried lavender blossoms until they’re fragrant and finely crushed. This releases their soothing aroma and makes them easier to mix into your mask.

Step 3

In a small bowl, mix together the ground oatmeal, ground lavender, and clay until evenly blended. Take a moment to enjoy the calming scent— a mixture of the floral smell of lavender and the clean, mineral scent of clay.

Step 4

Spoon the raw honey into the bowl with your dry ingredients. Gently stir it in. The honey adds natural moisture and a touch of sweetness to pamper your skin.

Step 5

Gradually add kefir, stirring as you go, until the mixture forms a thick yet spreadable paste. The kefir will give your mask a creamy texture and a gentle boost of probiotics for your skin.

Step 6

Spread the mask evenly over clean skin. If it feels too thick or clumps together, stir in a little extra kefir until it reaches a smooth, comfortable consistency. This batch makes enough for about three applications. Store any leftover mask in an airtight container in the fridge and use within a few days for the freshest, most nourishing results.

How to Use

  • How long should you leave the mask on: If you have dry, normal, or sensitive skin, leave the mask on for 5-10 minutes while slightly damp, then rinse off. Don’t leave it on until it dries. If you have oily or combination skin, you can leave it on for 10-15 minutes.
  • How often you can use it: For normal, dry, or sensitive skin: 1–2 times per week is enough to cleanse and nourish without over-drying. For oily or combination skin (using bentonite clay in the recipe), use 1-3 times per week to help control excess oil. Don’t use this mask daily – even though it is a gentle and natural mask, it can still irritate your skin if overused.
  • Post-mask care: Even a gentle natural mask will remove natural oils from your skin, so after rinsing off the mask apply some moisturiser or natural oil. I like to use calendula-infused oil or a pea-sized amount of tallow on my skin after rinsing off this mask.

Tips for the Best Face Mask

  • Grind the oatmeal and lavender blossoms as finely as possible. If you’re using a mortar and pestle, you might not get a perfect powder—just do your best to achieve a fine texture. Alternatively, a spice grinder or mini coffee mill works beautifully and makes the process faster.
  • Add just enough kefir to create a thick, spreadable paste. If it’s too thick, the mask will be hard to apply evenly; if it’s too thin, it may drip off your face.
  • This mask is easy to customize for your skin and preferences. Swap lavender for chamomile flowers for a gentler scent, or use yogurt or sour milk in place of kefir.
  • For dry or sensitive skin, keep the mask on for about 10 minutes. Leaving it on longer may cause it to dry completely, which can make it harder to wash off and potentially irritate delicate skin.

How to Store

  • Refrigerate immediately: Because the mask contains kefir and honey, store it in an airtight container in the fridge.
  • Shelf life: Use within 3–5 days. After that, the probiotics from kefir may start breaking down, and the texture or smell can change.
  • Do not freeze: Freezing can damage the texture of the mask and reduce the effectiveness of the ingredients.
  • Before use: Stir gently, as some separation may occur, and add a little more kefir if it looks too thick to be spreadable.
  • For longer storage: Mix only the clay, ground oats, and ground lavender together and place in a small jar with a tight lid. When stored completely dry in an airtight container, your blend of ground oats, clay, and lavender can last 6–12 months. To use, mix with raw honey and kefir and apply.
